Privacy-first blockchain has a storage problem.
Midnight has done something genuinely difficult: it has built a programmable privacy layer that gives developers the tools to create applications where sensitive data is protected at the protocol level. Zero-knowledge proofs. Selective disclosure. Private-by-design application logic. The on-chain execution story is solved.
But off-chain storage is still an open question, and for privacy-first applications, it is a critical one.
Where do credentials live after they are issued? Where do proof anchors get stored so they can be referenced months or years later? Where does RWA data go once a transaction is settled? Where does application state persist between sessions?
If the answer is IPFS or a centralized cloud provider, the privacy guarantee has a hole in it. You have built a trustless application on top of infrastructure that requires trust.
That is the gap this partnership is designed to close.
Lumera and Midnight Foundation Are Partnering to Bring Decentralized Storage to the Midnight Network
Today, we are announcing that Lumera Protocol and Midnight Foundation are partnering to bring Cascade, Lumera’s decentralized storage layer, to the Midnight network and its expanding ecosystem.
Midnight builders now have access to a storage layer built to match the chain they are already building on: permanent, permissionless, and free from central custodians. A working demo is live today.
The storage layer is available now.
Storage Is a Design Choice, and It Matters More for Privacy Apps
None of this makes IPFS the wrong choice. It made a deliberate design tradeoff: content-addressing without a built-in persistence guarantee, and that’s exactly right for data that only needs to live as long as the thing it’s attached to. An event ticket, a session asset, a short-lived proof: IPFS handles those well.
The question is what happens when the data needs to outlive the app, the event, or whoever’s paying to keep it pinned. For a privacy-first application storing credential references, proof anchors, or RWA data, that’s the job. If the off-chain record a cryptographic guarantee depends on can disappear, the on-chain guarantee can’t stand on its own. That’s not a flaw in IPFS. It’s a different job than IPFS was built for.
What Cascade Does Differently
Cascade is Lumera’s decentralized storage action. It is built on the Lumera SuperNode network, a distributed infrastructure layer for the Lumera ecosystem.
When you store a file on Cascade, it does not rely on pinning. It does not have a subscription that needs renewing. It does not have a single custodian that can be compelled, breached, or shut down. Files are distributed across SuperNodes and stored permanently, with no ongoing maintenance required from the application developer or the user.
For Midnight builders, this means:
Credentials can be stored permanently and referenced verifiably, without a centralized identity provider holding the underlying data.
Proof anchors can persist as long as the applications that rely on them exist, and beyond.
RWA data can be stored in a way that is durable, permissionless, and consistent with the privacy guarantees of the applications using it.
Application state can persist without routing through a cloud provider.
The storage layer now matches the ethos of the chain. Private, permanent, decentralized.
The Bigger Picture: Lumera as the Operating System for Autonomous Economic Intelligence
Cascade is one piece of a larger architecture.
Lumera is building the operating system for autonomous economic intelligence. The protocol is organized around five universal primitives that underpin how AI-native, Web3-native applications will be built, verified, and coordinated:
Durable Memory: Permanent, decentralized storage. The memory layer for applications that cannot afford to forget.
Verifiable Execution: Provenance infrastructure. A cryptographic record of what happened, when, and by whom.
Trust & Identity: On-chain reputation and identity for agents and participants. The FICO score of the AI economy.
Economic Coordination: The settlement layer that ties computation, storage, and verification into a functioning economy.
Composable Intelligence: The layer that lets these primitives compose into autonomous agents and workflows that can operate, verify, and transact without human intervention.
Cascade is live on Lumera mainnet today. This partnership brings it to the Midnight network and its expanding ecosystem. The roadmap goes further: as the partnership matures, Sense, Inference, Trust Graph, and the Agent Framework will follow.
Midnight gets the memory layer today. The full operating system is what comes next.
Why This Partnership Makes Sense
Midnight is building the privacy execution layer for the next generation of Web3 applications. The use cases it unlocks, including private trading, confidential lending, institutional settlement, and credential-based access control, are exactly the use cases that generate sensitive off-chain data that needs to persist.
Lumera is building the infrastructure that data needs to live on. Permanent, verifiable, and decentralized by design.
These two protocols are solving adjacent problems for the same category of builder. The partnership is the natural expression of that overlap.
What This Means for Midnight Builders
If you are building on Midnight today, you can now use Cascade as your off-chain storage layer. The working demo is live. You can see how Cascade fits into a Midnight application, what storing and retrieving data looks like, and how it compares to the alternatives you have been using.
This is infrastructure that does not require you to compromise on the principles behind what you are building. You picked Midnight because you wanted to build privacy-first. Now your storage layer can match that choice.
What Comes Next
This announcement marks the beginning of the partnership, not the ceiling of it. Lumera and the Midnight Foundation will continue to deepen the collaboration, expanding access to Lumera primitives for Midnight builders as each one matures.
The five primitives are designed to compound. Storage is the foundation. Verifiable execution, trust infrastructure, economic coordination, and composable intelligence build on top of it. Every Midnight application that stores on Cascade today is building on the first layer of something much larger.

About Midnight Foundation
The Midnight Foundation is an organization dedicated to advancing the development, adoption, and real-world impact of the Midnight network, the privacy enhancing blockchain project developed by Shielded Technologies. Designed for confidential smart contracts, Midnight enables censorship-resistant yet compliant decentralized applications. It leverages zero-knowledge proofs and a cooperative tokenomics architecture — with NIGHT as the utility token and DUST as the shielded capacity resource — to deliver a powerful combination of privacy, security, and decentralization.
About Lumera Protocol
Lumera Protocol is a high-performance blockchain purpose-built for AI-driven Web3 economies, integrating a Validator-SuperNode architecture to enable decentralized AI services, trustless computation, and secure data storage. Built on cometBFT Proof-of-Stake (PoS), Lumera ensures cross-chain compatibility, efficient AI data sharing, and scalable interoperability.
At its core, Lumera’s SuperNode-powered infrastructure extends beyond validation to support LLM hosting, autonomous agents, task verification, and cross-network communication, with governance driven by a stake-weighted system. Its adaptive tokenomics dynamically adjust inflation based on network participation, ensuring economic sustainability.
Lumera also introduces an Action & Agent Framework, powering decentralized AI services through specialized Actions (e.g., Cascade for storage, Sense for verification) and Agents (e.g., Inference for AI computation). By merging AI, decentralized computation, and blockchain security, Lumera sets a new standard for AI-powered applications and autonomous services in Web3.
